Photo Hunt - Protection

This weeks Theme is Protect (ion)
Go to Tnchick.com to participate

This weeks photo hunt was an easy one for me. I wanted to date back in history from where I lived in Montreux and remind people of the Castle of Chillon, especially during the Savoy period* of rule and Bernese period* of protection.

Here are three photos of the castle during our last visit in 2005.

Chateau Chillon as it is known was built on a rocky island . The castle served as natural protection and a strategic location to control the passage between northern and southern Europe.

The beauty of the fortress today.

The upper area served for guards to protect themselves and watch over the Castle.

During the The Savoy period from the 12th century to 1536, the Castle was known as the House of Savoy and controlled the route along the shores of Lake Geneva.

While in the The Bernese period from 1536 until 1798, the Bernese Swiss conquered the Pays de Vaud and occupied Chillon in 1536. The castle retained it's role as a fortress, arsenal and prison for over 260 years.

Happy Hunting - We are off for Vacation in sunny California with very limited internet access.

** Thanks everyone for all of the great comments. I'm reading but don't have enough time to visit. All of the comments are so wonderful though!**
